In the military, as in life, many people seek out a position of command. The Officer doesn’t just seek command, however, he seeks *control*. It isn’t sufficient that his orders are carried out; they must be enforced, and disobedience must be strictly disciplined. As much as he demands to be in control, though, there is a part of him that takes perverse pleasure in insubordination – those who do not bend to his will but instead must be bent to it. “I relish being the one in power,” the Officer explains, “and to have others submit to my authority. But occasionally to have that power tested, that authority resisted – that’s when things can get *very* interesting.” Perhaps it explains part of his fascination with the Brigadier. “She’s someone who respects authority and understands obedience, but she’s by no means afraid to challenge it physically as well as mentally. That’s how we met, actually. We both enjoy testing the limits of control – I like that about her. We bring out the best in each other.”
THE OFFICER’S TALE
It was his fascination with Eastern military treatises that led to the Officer meeting the Samurai. Today they, along with their companions the Brigadier and Geisha, have become the firmest of friends – and the fiercest of debating partners, engaging in heated discussion of everything from the politics of war to the politics of sex. Sometimes the foursome will deconstruct passages from the Bible, other times they will argue over translations of Sun Tzu’s *The Art of War*. Invariably, however, such passionate debate between such passionate people turns to talk of passionate subjects. “Why isn’t pornography an accepted form of literature?” the Officer will ask, half-interested in the topic and half in channeling the group’s energy from the drawing room to the bedroom. “We ask that works of literature speak to our deepest emotions and inclinations, that they fill our bellies with fire and set our hearts ablaze with feeling. Why, then, have we disowned so honest and truthful a form of literature, and reduced it to a grubby little industry that can only be traded beneath counters and behind closed curtains?” Once upon a time, the other three would look about the room awkwardly or take idle sips from their drinks. But now they know the Officer’s tactics all too well, and take mischievous glee in teasing his motives for introducing racier subjects. “The gentleman doth protest too much,” the Brigadier smirks. “We all know that pornography suits you better the way it is. Oh, the discipline you could administer if only you caught someone reading that disgraceful smut!” The Officer grinned like a naughty schoolboy, aware that he had telegraphed his manoeuvre. “Well,” offered the Geisha coyly, “perhaps if we had not been so shocked to see *Speculum al Foderi* on your bookshelf, it would not have prompted us to enjoy such interesting… intercourse with you both.” The Officer straightened his collar, proudly. “What can I say – Sun Tzu isn’t the only master tactician…”
