Unlacing the bustles

If there's a bustle already laced onto the Victoriana pinstripe bustle skirt, you will need to:

- undo the knot that holds the ends of the lace together and fully remove the lacing.

- remove the split rings that hold the pinstripe overbustle to the underbustle, and the underbustle to the pinstripe bustle skirt.

What you need for lacing bustles into the Victoriana bustle skirt

- a long or short Jed Phoenix of London Victoriana bustle skirt,

- an underbustle (either in pinstripe, red rose fabric, purple, blue, green, silver, red or black acetate satin, Royal Stewart tartan, or skull and rose print)

- a pinstripe overbustle

- the four split rings (provided with your long or short Jed Phoenix of London Victoriana bustle skirt)

- approximately 2.2m of corset lacing (provided on purchase of your long or short Victoriana bustle skirt)

- a flat surface.

How to lace the bustles onto the Victoriana pinstripe bustle skirt

1. Find the middle of the piece of corset lacing, by placing the ends of the lacing together and letting the rest of the lacing hang down. Tie a loose knot in the middle of the lacing.

2. Take the underbustle (either a pinstripe one if you're going for an all pinstripe look or one of the satin or tartan bustles if you're adding a splash of colour). Place the underbustle between the strips of D-rings on the skirt so that the seam of the underbustle is face down on the skirt and the two strips of D-rings on the underbustle are roughly aligned with the two strips of D-rings on the skirt. Please note that the underbustle is designed to be bigger than the gap between the two strips of D-rings on the skirt. This gives more dimension and weight to the bustles when they are laced on.

3. Take a split ring and attach the top D-ring on one of the strips of D-rings on the skirt to the corresponding top D-ring on the underbustle.

4. Repeat step 3 for the other top D-ring on the skirt and underbustle. The underbustle is now attached to the skirt ia the D-rings and will not fall off if you were to pick the skirt up from the flat surface.

5. Take the pinstripe overbustle and repeat the process of using the split rings to attach the top D-rings together. So, with the pinstripe skirt and underbustle on the flat surface, place the pinstripe overbustle, with the seam face down and the strips of D-rings roughly aligned to the strips of D-rings on the underbustle. Attach one of the top D-rings on the underbustle to the corresponding top D-ring on the overbustle. Do this on both strips of D-rings so that if you were to pick the garment up, the two bustles would be attached to the skirt via the four split rings and the bustles would hang nicely.

6. Take the corset lacing. Feed one end through the top D-ring on the lefthand strip of D-rings on the Victoriana pinstripe bustle skirt, (in through the top, out through the bottom) and feed the other end of the lacing in through the top of the top D-ring on the righthand strip of D-rings on the skirt. (The knot you tied in the corset lacing earlier will help keep the two ends of corset lacing approximately the same length). Take the lacing on the lefthandside of the skirt as you look at it and feed it through the top of the top D-ring on the underbustle and then in through the top of the top D-ring on the overbustle. Repeat this on the righthandside. Cross the lacings over, undo the knot that marks the middle of the corset lacing, and repeat the process down the skirt so you continue with:

-in through the top of the second D-ring on the skirt (both sides)

-in through the top of the second D-ring on the underbustle (both sides)

-in through the top of the second D-ring on the overbustle (both sides)

-cross the lacing over.

-in through the top of the third D-ring on the skirt (both sides)

etc etc until you finish with the sixth D-ring.

Then tie a secure knot at the end of the corset lacing. The lacing should allow the bustles to hang quite loosely. Do not pull the lacing too tightly as this will spoil the line and hang of the skirt and bustles.
